An exhibition about research on the ocean
Future Ocean: The oceans are the largest biosphere on our planet. We know that they have a key function for our existence. But less research is done on the endless breadth of the ocean as on the surface of the moon. Thus we consider ocean research an important mission of science for society. Because we believe that by understanding the ocean we can sustain our future.
"Understanding the ocean – Sustaining our future" With this motto the travelling exhibition of the Cluster of Excellence "The Future Ocean", based on six scientific topics, presents the challenges with which modern ocean research is confronted and the opportunities that arise from these. The exhibits cover the topics fisheries, coastal research, ocean observation, waste in the oceans, ocean acidification, marine resources and marine biodiversity. Together they offer visitors the possibility to gain a comprehensive overview of the current issues in the marine sciences.
The title "Future Ocean Dialogue" is no coincidence: The exhibition places special emphasis on the possibility of exchange between science and society, and that explicitly in both directions. Visitors can have their wide-ranging questions on any of the exhibition topics answered directly by experts of Kiel marine sciences.
In 2014, the exhibition successfully celebrated its premiere in Brazil: more than 20,000 visitors saw the exhibits of Kiel marine science at five locations in the entire country. In the past years the exhibits were presented to the public in Germany for the first time at Kiel University and throughout the Scientific Year 2016*17 "Seas and Oceans" at numerous events. But the journey of the travelling exhibition will continue: The next presentation abroad will be at the opening of the Ocean Science Center Mindelo, Cape Verde, displayed from November 2017 to Februar 2018.
